Can You Really Read Just 2 Psalms for a Whole Week?
This week, we will begin reading through the Psalms together. Like I wrote last week, we are not reading every Psalm together, but we have a selection of favorite Psalms from Elders and staff. Next week, we will spend time on just two: Psalm 1 and 2.
Wait? We're spending a whole week just reading two Psalms? Won't that be boring and repetitive?
If you've never spent multiple days reading and re-reading the same passage over and over, it might seem like the passage will get stale, but I think you'll find that's not the case. On day one, it's just an introduction. You'll probably get the main point, and maybe you'll research a question or two about something you didn't understand in the text. On day two, you'll probably notice things you missed the first time. You may have MORE questions as you start to notice certain word choices and sentence structures. You may find yourself looking up other translations to see how the Psalm sounds in them. You may realize that you've heard the Psalm before in another part of the bible, ant then you're off to do a little cross-referencing.
You may spend time committing a cluster of verses to memory. If we already have a scripture memory song for it, you may start singing though the Psalm by day 3 or 4, only glancing at the text to make sure you're on track.
By day 5 or 6, you may face a challenge at work or school or with family, and you may find yourself quoting a verse from the Psalm as guidance--hopefully not one of those violent verses where you pray down fire on your adversary--but you get the point. The Psalm will be front of mind for you. You may find yourself praying for someone and the prayer that comes out is mingled with and motivated by the things you've been reading.
By day 7, you might just be raptured up into a cloud of heavenly glory. Or maybe you'll just be a regular Christian with a little bit more of the Scripture deep in your heart. Either way it's a win!
Another great thing you can do with the scripture is pray through the Psalm verse by verse. I'll give some more instruction on this in another post, but for now, just try it out based on that simple description, and see how it goes.
