A Bible-First for Me

Many of you are aware that we are entering into a season of Bible reading and Scripture memory as a church. Last week, we read Matthew Chapters 1 & 2. If you remember way back in 2023, we started our Gospel of the Kingdom series, and I began preaching through Matthew one passage at a time, so as we read as a church, we will be covering familiar ground for a little while.

If you want to learn more about how to read scripture effectively, and if you want to stay on track as we read together, visit the scripture reading page on our website!

Last Sunday, I made a big to-do about bringing your physical Bible to church on Sundays. I’m a big fan of getting well acquainted with a good, old-fashioned physical Bible. However, afterward, a church member shared her Bible discipline with me, and I found that she has a really good relationship with the scriptures and ONLY reads electronic Bible sources, listens to the audio Bible, and takes notes during church relying on the Bible verses we project to the screen.

And no, she’s not Gen-z or even a Millennial!

When I was in college, I needed an older Christian to challenge me to start bringing my physical Bible around.  At the time, I didn’t have a relationship with the Bible at all, so the challenge took me where I needed to go. In the end, that’s the goal. I want people to have a good relationship with the scriptures, however that looks for you.

If you find your Bible life to be less than desirable, consider your habits. Do you rely on electronic Bible sources only? Maybe getting a physical Bible to tote around and mark up like a crazy-person-for-Jesus could help. If you are already a physical Bible thumper, maybe try some electronic sources.

The You Version Bible App is a great one. In fact, here is a first for me in reading the Bible: I’ve just started a LISTEN-through-the-Bible-in-a-year plan on the You Version App. It’s from The Bible Recap podcast, and I’m impressed and excited by it. If it matters to you, as early as day 2, the devotional writer, Tara-Leigh Cobble, covered some deep Michael Heiser-esq "nephilum" theology in a brief and totally accessible way! That’s really saying something.

Happy reading, listening, and memorizing!
