Notes from the Sermon

Sermon Title: The Magnificat
Sermon Videos: The Magnificat
Scriptures: | Luke 1:39-56 | Luke 6:24 | James 1:9-10 |

What to Believe

  • God is always worthy of praise.
  • The Magnificat: A Great Comfort and a Great Challenge.
  • The Comfort: God scatters the proud, brings down the mighty, exalts the humble, fills the hungry, and sends the rich away empty.
  • The Challenge: God sends those who idolize wealth and material possessions away empty because they have already received their consolation, served on a silver platter by the world. Since they have already embraced the world's consolation, they have left no room for the Holy Spirit to comfort them.
  • God places his gracious gift not on the top shelf, where only the mighty and wealthy might attain it, but on the bottom shelf, where it is available to the lowly and anyone humble enough to stoop down to receive it.

How to Obey

  • Begin prayers with praises to God.
  • Be comforted by the Lord, not the world and its riches.
  • If we are poor and lowly, remember to boast in our exaltation because it is all accomplished by the Lord.
  • If we are rich and powerful, remember to boast in our humiliation because the Lord is ultimately responsible for what we have and it will soon pass away.

How to Walk Intimately with God

  • Give sacrificially to the Lord and what He does in the ways He leads and convicts you.
  • Look for God's heart in both the comforts and challenges of life.
  • Place your wealth and possessions, or lack thereof, at the Lord's feet and ask Him what He wants us to do with them.
  • Ask Him for the courage to say yes to His plans.
