Notes from the Sermon
Sermon Title: What We Believe
Sermon Video: What We Believe
What to Believe
- Everyone has beliefs. Our beliefs define who we think we are and how we see the world around us. Satan's first attack in the Garden of Eden was an attack on Eve's beliefs about God's goodness. Satan tempted Eve to think God was selfish and did not want her to be like him. He continues to attack us through our beliefs today. We often miss the heart of God in his commandments and must be careful not to be careful not to become legalistic when obeying him. Eve missed God's heart in the command not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of food and evil by adding rules that God never gave. We still often do this with God's commands.
- Objective truth is true no matter what you think about it.
- Our beliefs drive our behaviors but can’t drive reality.
- Our goal is for our beliefs to align with what is objectively true. We need someone (God) outside our system to tell us how the system works and what is true, which then informs us of the correct beliefs. Some examples of correct beliefs from Scripture include that Jesus is the way, the truth, the life and that no man comes to the Father except through Jesus (John 14:6). The way to know truth is to abide in the word of God (John 8:31-32)
- You may have to dismantle erroneous beliefs to find out what is true.
How to Obey
- Wellspring Church’s mission is Making Disciples who Hear God’s Voice. Making Disciples means teaching people What to Believe, How to Obey, and How to Walk Intimately with God. Teaching people what to believe is not teaching people how to think; it is just teaching the commands of the Lord and the apostles’ teaching.
- All of us are called to make disciples. While not everyone has the spiritual gift of teaching, we can all be a point of contact to an unbeliever, teach what we know, and guide that believer toward community in the Body of Christ.
- Surrender to Jesus as the source of all truth. Stay in the Word and prayer and make an effort to align our thoughts regarding what we believe with our actions.
- Pray for clarification on what your gifts are and look for ways to use them, but also be willing to walk in other gifts as God leads you while discipling others.
- There are no orphans in the kingdom of God. You belong in the body of Christ. In Jesus, you have a Father. Reject Satan’s lies that you are alone.
How to Walk Intimately with God
- Ponder this statement: "You don't believe something because you say you believe it even if you think you know it; you believe something if you live your life like it is true." Dallas Willard
- Examine the heart behind God's commands. Are you ignoring God's heart in favor of legalism? Celebrate the goodness of God's heart in his commands.
- Confess where you have fallen short and ask God to restore correct beliefs. For example, reflect on whether you have an erroneous belief like those behind a “Savior Complex”--combining the idea that God will not come through for others and I want to help people. If this is your belief, repent and ask God to help you believe the truth, that God is good and all-powerful.
- Jesus teaches that God is Father. He shows us his love. He teaches that we need forgiveness and freedom from sin. We are adopted as God's children. He teaches us that our purpose is to be with God.
- The world teaches there is no God and makes spiritual orphans. We feel we don’t belong to anyone and allow our feelings to tell us what is true. Teaching people what we believe is introducing orphans to the Father.
